    Metal-organic frameworks derived from ternary metal oxide directly grown on the conductive substrate have attracted great interest in electrochemical sensing. In this work, metal-organic framework-derived ternary ZnCo2O4 nanoplate arrays that were grown on carbon cloth (ZnCo2O4 NA/CC) are fabricated and applied for the electrochemical determination of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA). Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) reveals that a network-like CC substrate is covered with considerable nanoplate arrays, presenting a large specific area. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrates the nanoplate arrays to be composed of ZnCo2O4. Benefiting from the unique array morphology and ternary element composition, the ZnCo2O4 NA/CC shows desirable performances for simultaneous detection of AA, DA, and UA. The individual detection limits are 7.14 μM for AA, 0.25 μM for DA, and 0.33 μM for UA. This work presents results of an extensive investigation of the structural anisotropy of the thermal expansion and local dynamics within these crystals, obtained from a beneficial cooperation of NMR crystallography and ab initio calculations of non-covalent interactions. The observed structural anisotropy and spin-lattice relaxation times are traced to large spatial variations in the strength of molecular interactions in the crystal lattice, especially in the orientation of the hydrogen bonds. A completely resolved crystal structure for oxaloacetic acid is reported for the first time. Thanks to multi-instrumental calorimetric effort, this work clarifies phase behavior, determines third-law entropies of the crystals, and states definitive polymorph ranking for succinic and fumaric acids. These thermodynamic observations are then interpreted in terms of first-principles quasi-harmonic calculations of cohesive properties. A sophisticated model capturing electronic, thermal, and configurational-entropic effects on the crystal structure approaches captures the subtle Gibbs energy differences governing polymorph ranking for succinic and fumaric acids, representing another success story of computational chemistry.The liver is a vital organ that functions to detoxify the body. Liver cancer and infectious diseases such as influenza and malaria can fatally compromise liver function. mRNA delivery is a relatively new means of therapeutic treatment which enables expression of tumor or pathogenic antigens, and elicits immune responses for therapeutic or prophylactic effect. Novel nanoparticles with unique biological properties serving as mRNA carriers have allowed mRNA-based therapeutics to become more clinically viable and relevant. In this review, we highlight recent progress in development of nanoparticle-based mRNA delivery systems for treatment of various liver diseases. First, we present developments in nanoparticle systems used to deliver mRNAs, with specific focus on enhanced cellular uptake and endosomal escape achieved through the use of these nanoparticles. To provide context for diseases that target the liver, we provide an overview of the function and structure of the liver, as well as the role of the immune system in the liver. Then, mRNA-based therapeutic approaches for addressing HCC are highlighted. We also discuss nanoparticle-based mRNA vaccines for treating hepatotropic infectious diseases. Finally, we present current challenges in the clinical translation of nanoparticle-based mRNA delivery systems and provide outlooks for their utilization in treating liver-related diseases.Representation in data sets is critical to improving healthcare for the largest possible number of people. Unfortunately, pregnancy is a very understudied period of time. Further, the gap in available data is wide between pregnancies in urban areas versus rural areas. There are many limitations in the current data that is available. Herein, we review these limitations and strengths of available data sources. In addition, we propose a new mechanism to enhance the granularity, depth, and speed with which data is made available regarding rural pregnancy.Rural communities are a vital segment of the US population; however, these communities are shrinking, and their population is aging. Rural women experience health disparities including increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality. In this article, we will explore these trends and their determinants both within and external to the health care system. Health care providers, public health professionals, and policymakers should be aware of these social and structural factors that influence health outcomes and take action to reduce generational cycles of health disparity. While these infections are prevalent globally, the approach to evaluation and treatment varies greatly based on the capacity to make an accurate diagnosis. In low-resource settings, a syndromic approach is often used over an etiologic-based evaluation and management. Syndromic treatment of STIs recognizes groups of symptoms and recommends a multidrug empiric treatment that will cover the most likely causative organisms. By definition, syndromic treatment cannot be used as a screening tool, leaving a large portion of asymptomatic infections untreated. This will lead to the persistence of infection and associated sequelae including pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Syndromic treatment also leads to the overtreatment of many infections, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance. The rising threat of Neisseria gonorrhoeae resistance to last-line antibiotics is of global concern. Rapid, accurate, affordable, and easy-to-use point-of-care testing needs to be made readily available to all corners of the world to provide better care to patients and address the growing threat of multidrug resistant organisms. An urgent and collaborative global effort is needed to address the looming threat of a dangerous STI that is resistant to last-line antibiotics.Imperforate hymen is a common condition that with classic appearance and presentation in puberty. This may be diagnosed in a neonate when mucocolpos is noted. There are many great pretenders of this condition, but the hallmarks include a bulging hymen with blue hue at puberty. If this is not seen on external genital exam, the provider should proceed with magnetic resonance imaging to better assess the reproductive tract anatomy before engaging in surgery. After encapsulating a Ru(II)-based photocatalyst, the obtained Ru(II)@COF-V efficiently catalyzes the thiol-ene click reaction between vinyl and cysteine upon visible-light irradiation. Ru(II)@COF-V preferentially accumulates in lipid droplets of tumor cells via lipid raft- and caveolin-related endocytosis and induces lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis by consuming cysteine, exhibiting powerful therapeutic activity against colon cancer. We believe that this study both enriches the ambient synthesis of nanoscale COFs and highlights the feasibility of intracellular photochemical reactions for tumor therapy.

    Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression (MSCC) is a devastating complication of cancer, affecting approximately 3000 patients per annum in England. However, access to rehabilitation services for MSCC patients is limited. The London Spinal Cord Injury Centre has set up a bespoke MSCC rehabilitation pathway from May 2013. This article aims to describe the clinical features and functional outcomes of patients with MSCC admitted to a Specialist Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Centre between May 2013 and December 2021.

    A total of 40 patients with MSCC were admitted – 32 male and 8 female patients. The average length of stay was 6 weeks. 17(42.5%) patients had primary prostate cancer. Most patients (34(85%)) had thoracic MSCC. There was an improvement in the Spinal Cord Independence Measure in all patients with an average significant improvement from 43.8 to 64.5 (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in SCIM scores between patients under 65 and over 65. 28 (70%) patients required psychological input. 33(82.5%) patients were discharged home.

    In Sierra Leone, the lack of information on pulmonary embolism (PE) limits the access to evidence-based standard of diagnostic work-up and management of the disease. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and management of acute pulmonary embolism in our setting and to determine whether the pre-test probability scoring algorithms were used prior to Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiogram (CTPA) request.

    This retrospective observational study was conducted on CTPA-confirmed PE patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, Choithrams Memorial Hospital, in Freetown, Sierra Leone between July 2014 to June 2019. Clinical data, and pertinent investigations related to PE were determined. CTPA findings were correlated with the patient’s hemodynamic status. The calculated pretest clinical probability scores (PCPS) for each patient were compared to the CTPA results.

    CTPA-confirmed PE in the study cohort was 79, with a rate of 16 new PE per year. The frequency of PE was 1.9% of the total hospital admission per year.
