    Selenium (Se), an essential trace element for human and animal health, is covalently incorporated into amino acids, acts as a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes, and is involved in the maintenance of the immune system. The main goal of this investigation was to show the effect of Se supplementation, at levels slightly higher than the recommended values, combined with natural zeolite clinoptilolite on Se deposition in tissues (muscle and liver) and on the immune and antioxidative status of supplemented growing pigs. The experiment was carried out during a 98 d period on 60 pigs. Pigs were fed a standard feed mixture based on corn and soybean and were divided into four groups, according to the level of dietary selenium supplementation as follows C-0.3 mg/kg DM organic Se, E1-0.5 mg/kg DM sodium selenite, E2-0.5 mg/kg DM organic selenium; E3-0.5 mg/kg DM organic Se+0.2% zeolite. Higher (P less then 0.05) selenium concentrations were determined in the muscle and liver in growing pigs fed with higher organic Se inlite (0.2% DM) has increased (P less then 0.05) Se deposition in liver, muscle, and blood, compared to the dietary addition of 0.3 mg/kg DM of the organic Se.The COST action “Standardising output-based surveillance to control non-regulated diseases of cattle in the European Union (SOUND control),” aims to harmonise the results of surveillance and control programmes (CPs) for non-EU regulated cattle diseases to facilitate safe trade and improve overall control of cattle infectious diseases. In this paper we aimed to provide an overview on the diversity of control for these diseases in Europe. A non-EU regulated cattle disease was defined as an infectious disease of cattle with no or limited control at EU level, which is not included in the European Union Animal health law Categories A or B under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2002. A CP was defined as surveillance and/or intervention strategies designed to lower the incidence, prevalence, mortality or prove freedom from a specific disease in a region or country. Therefore, the standardising of the outputs of these programmes to enable comparison represents a challenge.This study aimed at the development of an analytic web-based system for the assessment of animal health in Kuwait. The data sources were based on the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) repository with data gathered for the period (2005-2020). An on-line web-based system using TABLEAU Creator was developed for monitoring and surveillance of animal disease outbreaks. Five animal diseases were identified in Kuwait; namely, HPAI, FMD, glanders, LSD and MERS-CoV. The highest numbers of outbreaks were recorded for HPAI, followed by FMD. Examples of spatio-temporal visualizations of the web based mappings are presented and include disease cases, number of outbreaks and farm locations, among other features. The web-based system can serve as a monitoring tool to easily display the status of animal health in Kuwait. It can also serve to quickly identify and track disease outbreaks and monitor the spread patterns of new or emerging animal diseases between neighboring countries.Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis (MAP) is the causative agent of Johne’s disease, which is an economically and clinically relevant pathogen for commercial deer production. The purpose of this study was to develop a method that could be used to rapidly detect MAP infection in deer using the Actiphage Rapid blood test. This test has previously been used to detect MAP in cattle blood following the purification of buffy coat using Ficoll gradients, however this method is quite laborious and costly. The purpose of this study was to develop a simpler method of blood preparation that was also compatible with deer blood and the Actiphage test. Initially differential lysis of RBCs using Ammonium Chloride-Potassium (ACK) blood lysis buffer was compared with the Ficoll gradient centrifugation method using cattle blood samples for compatibility with the Actiphage reagents, and it was found that the simpler ACK method did not have an impact on the Actiphage test reagents, producing an equivalent sensitivity for detection of low levels of MAP. When the two methods were compared using clinical blood samples from farmed deer, the ACK lysis method resulted in a cleaner sample. When a blinded test of 132 animals from 4 different production groups was carried out, the majority of the positive test results were found to be from animals in just one group, with a small number identified in a second group. The test results were found to be reproducible when a small set of positive animals were tested again 1 month after their initial testing. Finally a set of negative animals which had been previously screened using an ELISA test, all animals gave a negative Actiphage result. This study shows that this improved sample preparation method and Actiphage blood testing can be used to test blood samples from deer, and the full diagnostic potential of the method can now be evaluated.Acute hemorrhage in small animals results from traumatic and non-traumatic causes. This review seeks to describe current understanding of the resuscitation of the acutely hemorrhaging small animal (dog and cat) veterinary patient through evaluation of pre-clinical canine models of hemorrhage and resuscitation, clinical research in dogs and cats, and selected extrapolation from human medicine. The physiologic dose and response to whole blood loss in the canine patient is repeatable both in anesthetized and awake animals and is primarily characterized clinically by increased heart rate, decreased systolic blood pressure, and increased shock index and biochemically by increased lactate and lower base excess. Previously, initial resuscitation in these patients included immediate volume support with crystalloid and/or colloid, regardless of total volume, with a target to replace lost vascular volume and bring blood pressure back to normal. Newer research now supports prioritizing hemorrhage control in conjunction with judicious crystalloid administration followed by early consideration for administration of platelets, plasma and red blood during the resuscitation phase. This approach minimizes blood loss, ameliorates coagulopathy, restores oxygen delivery and correct changes in the glycocalyx. There are many hurdles in the application of this approach in clinical veterinary medicine including the speed with which the bleeding source is controlled and the rapid availability of blood component therapy. Recommendations regarding the clinical approach to volume resuscitation in the acutely hemorrhaging veterinary patient are made based on the canine pre-clinical, veterinary clinical and human literature reviewed.Improved breeding practices and participatory health services have been designed and implemented by a partnership between national and international institutions in various parts of Ethiopia since 2014. Based on a panel data of two waves, we have estimated the impact of these interventions on small ruminant fertility, offtake, return per head of animal, and gross income per adult equivalent. Different specifications of the difference-in-differences model revealed that access to small ruminant health services has increased offtake, return per head of sheep/goat, and gross income per adult equivalent. Participants in community-based small ruminant breeding have also higher offtake and gross income per capita than those who are not taking part. The findings of this study are expected to help understand the economic benefits that accrue to rural areas when livestock development interventions are made based on the right diagnosis. The results of this study will also be useful in informing the ongoing discussion in Ethiopia on the transformation of the livestock sector.Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common persistent arrhythmia, but the mechanism of AF has not been fully elucidated, and existing approaches to diagnosis and treatment face limitations. Recently, exosomes have attracted considerable interest in AF research due to their high stability, specificity and cell-targeting ability. The aim of this review is to summarize recent literature, analyze the advantages and limitations of exosomes, and to provide new ideas for their use in understanding the mechanism and improving the diagnosis and treatment of AF.Background Patients who underwent permanent pacemaker (PM) implantation have a potential risk of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction. However, assessment of LV ejection fraction (LVEF) shows a limited role in identifying subclinical LV systolic dysfunction and predicting cardiovascular (CV) outcomes. Methods We reviewed 1,103 patients who underwent permanent PM implantation between January 2007 and December 2017. After excluding patients who did not undergo echocardiograms before or after PM implantation and those with LV ejection fraction (LVEF) less then 50%, significant valve dysfunction, and history of cardiac surgery before PM implantation, 300 (67 ± 13 years, 119 men) were finally analyzed. LV mechanical function was assessed with LV global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS) using 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. buy GSK-4362676 CV outcomes were defined as a composite of CV death and hospitalization for heart failure. Results At 44 ± 28 months after post-PM echocardiogram, 23 patients (7.7%) had experienced CV outcomes. LV mechanical function worsened after PM implantation in patients with CV outcomes. The cut-off value of 11.2% in |LV-GLS| on post-PM echocardiogram had a better predictive value for CV outcomes (AUC; 0.784 vs. 0.647, p = 0.012). CV outcome in patients with |LV-GLS| less then 11.2% was worse than that in those with |LV-GLS| ≥ 11.2% (log-rank p less then 0.001). Multivariate Cox model revealed that reduced |LV-GLS| was independently associated with CV outcomes. Conclusions Pacing deteriorates LV mechanical function. Impaired LV-GLS is associated with poor CV outcomes in patients who underwent PM implantation.More than 4 millions of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are waiting for cardiac surgery around the world. Few of these patients are treated only thanks to the support of many non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Starting in December 2019, the so-called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly become a worldwide pandemic and has dramatically impacted on all the international humanitarian activities for congenital heart disease. We analyzed data from all the Italian congenital cardiac surgery centers with the aim to quantify the impact of the pandemic on their charities. Fifteen Italian centers participated in the study and contributed to data collection. We analyzed and compared data regarding humanitarian activities carried out abroad and on site from two periods year 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and year 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic). In 2019, 53 international missions were carried out by Italian congenital cardiac surgeons, resulting in the treatment of 471 CHD patients. In the same period 11 Italian cardiac centers operated on 251 foreign patients in Italy.
