Moreover, ϕPSII of P50 plants was less affected by heat exposure. Thus, our results suggest that priming at 50 °C at the SE induction phase is a promising strategy to improve heat resilience in maritime pine.We consider state changes in quantum theory due to “conditional action” and relate these to the discussion of entropy decrease due to interventions of “intelligent beings” and the principles of Szilard and Landauer/Bennett. The mathematical theory of conditional actions is a special case of the theory of “instruments”, which describes changes of state due to general measurements and will therefore be briefly outlined in the present paper. As a detailed example, we consider the imperfect erasure of a qubit that can also be viewed as a conditional action and will be realized by the coupling of a spin to another small spin system in its ground state.Atherosclerosis-related coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading sources of mortality and morbidity in the world. Primary and secondary prevention appear crucial to reduce CAD-related complications. In this scenario, statin treatment was shown to be clinically effective in the reduction of adverse events, but systemic administration provides suboptimal results. As an attempt to improve bioavailability and effectiveness, polymers and nanoparticles for statin delivery were recently investigated. Polymers and nanoparticles can help statin delivery and their effects by increasing oral bioavailability or enhancing target-specific interaction, leading to reduced vascular endothelial dysfunction, reduced intimal hyperplasia, reduced ischemia-reperfusion injury, increased cardiac regeneration, positive remodeling in the extracellular matrix, reduced neointimal growth and increased re-endothelization. Moreover, some innovative aspects described in other cardiovascular fields could be translated into the CAD scenario. Recent preclinical studies are underlining the effect of statins in the stimulation and differentiation of endogenous cardiac stem cells, as well as in targeting of local adverse conditions implicated in atherosclerosis, and statin delivery through poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) appears the most promising aspect of current research to enhance drug activity. The present review intends to summarize the current evidence about polymers and nanoparticles for statin delivery in the field of cardiovascular disease, trying to shed light on this topic and identify new avenues for future studies.Boron carbide (B4C) ceramics were synthesized by spark plasma sintering at a temperature between 1600 and 2050 °C without employing any sintering additives. The effect of sintering process parameters, such as temperature, holding time, pressure, hearting rate, and pulsed electric current, and the particle size of the raw powder on the densification behavior and mechanical properties of B4C ceramics, were comprehensively and systematically investigated. Hardness and fracture toughness of B4C that has a density close to the theoretical value were found to be 33.5 ± 0.2 GPa and 3.21 ± 0.13 MPa·m1/2, respectively. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis revealed no abnormal growth of grains due to an increase in holding time and pressure. Twin structures present in ceramics are beneficial for their mechanical performance. Two new minor Amaryllidaceae alkaloids were isolated from Hippeastrum × hybridum cv. Ferrari and Narcissus pseudonarcissus cv. Carlton. The chemical structures were identified by various spectroscopic (one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) NMR, circular dichroism (CD), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and by comparison with literature data of similar compounds. Both isolated alkaloids were screened for their human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (hBuChE) inhibition activity. One of the new compounds, a heterodimer alkaloid of narcikachnine-type, named narciabduliine (2), showed balanced inhibition potency for both studied enzymes, with IC50 values of 3.29 ± 0.73 µM for hAChE and 3.44 ± 0.02 µM for hBuChE. The accommodation of 2 into the active sites of respective enzymes was predicted using molecular modeling simulation.Using glycosaminoglycan Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (gagCEST) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), this study comparatively evaluated the GAG contents of lumbar intervertebral disks (IVDs) of patients with non-specific low back pain (nsLBP), radiculopathy, and asymptomatic volunteers to elucidate the association of clinical manifestation and compositional correlate. A total of 18 patients (mean age 57.5 ± 22.5 years) with radiculopathy, 16 age-matched patients with chronic nsLBP and 20 age-matched volunteers underwent standard morphologic and compositional gagCEST MRI on a 3T scanner. In all cohorts, GAG contents of lumbar IVDs were determined using gagCEST MRI. An assessment of morphologic IVD degeneration based on the Pfirrmann classification and T2-weighted sequences served as a reference. A linear mixed model adjusted for multiple confounders was used for statistical evaluation. IVDs of patients with nsLBP showed lower gagCEST values than those of volunteers (nsLBP 1.3% [99% confidence intervals (CI) 1.0; 1.6] vs. volunteers 1.9% [99% CI 1.6; 2.2]). Yet, IVDs of patients with radiculopathy (1.8% [99% CI 1.4; 2.1]) were not different from patients with nsLBP or volunteers. In patients with radiculopathy, IVDs directly adjacent to IVD extrusions demonstrated lower gagCEST values than distant IVDs (adjacent 0.9% [99% CI 0.3; 1.5], distant 2.1% [99% CI 1.7; 2.5]). Advanced GAG depletion in nsLBP and directly adjacent to IVD extrusions in radiculopathy indicates close interrelatedness of clinical pathology and compositional degeneration. We examine whether people seek information that might help them make sense of others’ dishonest behavior. SC43 Participants were told that a hypothetical partner (either a friend or a stranger) had engaged in a task in which the partner could lie to boost their earnings at the expense of the participant’s earnings. Participants were less likely to search for information that can justify potential dishonest behavior conducted by a friend than by a stranger (Experiment 1). When participants knew for certain that their partners had lied to them, they were less likely to assume that that the lie was justified when told that the partner was a friend rather than a stranger (Experiment 2). The results imply that people are more likely to search for information that may reduce the severity of possible dishonest behavior when a stranger, rather than a friend, is responsible for the behavior.
