The unilateral GPA pedicled flap is a useful technique suitable for the reconstruction of anterior-most perforations that are difficult to cover with other endonasal techniques.

To evaluate ordinary behavioral pattern suppression performance of individuals with tinnitus under disruptive effect using Stroop Color Word Interference Test-TBAG Form (SCWT), and to determine the impact of acoustic stimulus on this performance.

40 individuals with subjective tinnitus at Slight and higher severity according to Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) (16 females, 24 males; mean age 42.02 ± 10.00) (Study group), and 40 healthy individuals (Control group) (18 females, 22 males; mean age 38.85 ± 10.25) were included in this study. All individuals were subjected to audiological evaluation. SCWT was applied with and without acoustic stimulus (NB noise), and test completion durations were recorded.

It was determined that the duration for completion of 5 sections of SCWT, both in the presence of and without acoustic stimulus, was longer in the Study group than the control group. In the presence of acoustic stimulus, it took longer for the individuals with tinnitus to complete sections4 and 5, and the control group to complete sections3, 4 and 5 in SCWT in comparison with the lack of acoustic stimulus.

It was determined that SCWT performance of the individuals with tinnitus was worse than the individuals without tinnitus, both in the presence of and without acoustic stimulus. It was found that SCWT performances of both groups with acoustic stimulus were better than their test performances without acoustic stimulus.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant confusion about healthcare providers’ and patients’ pandemic-specific risks related to surgery. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize recommendations for sinus and anterior skull base surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Scopus and Embase were searched by two independent otolaryngologists from the Young Otolaryngologists of IFOS (YO-IFOS) for studies dealing with sinus and skull base surgery during COVID-19 pandemic. The review also included unpublished guidelines edited by Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery or Neurosurgery societies. Perioperative factors were investigated including surgical indications, preoperative testing of patients, practical management in operating rooms, technical aspects of surgery and postoperative management. The literature review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. The criteria for considering studies or guidelines for the review were based on the population, intervention, com optimizing the use of PPE is essential with sinus and anterior skull base surgery.

Free flap reconstruction is a valuable technique to preserve function in oncological head and neck surgery. Postoperative graft thrombosis is a dreaded risk. This study aims to compare low-dose unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) in perioperative thrombosis prophylaxis.

This is a retrospective analysis of 266 free flaps performed at our academic center. A comparison was made between 2 patient groups, based on their respective postoperative prophylaxis protocols either with UFH (n = 87) or LMWH (n = 179). Primary endpoints were the frequency of transplant thrombosis and the number of flap failures. Secondary endpoints were the occurrence of peri- and postoperative complications.

The flap survival rate was 96.6% and 93.3% for the groups UFH and LMWH, respectively (P = 0.280). The rate of postoperative bleeding requiring revision was 4.6% and 6.7% for each group, respectively (P = 0.498). We found a hematoma formation in 4.6% and 3.9% (P = 0.792).

The free-flap survival rate using low-dose UFH seems to be equivalent to LMWH regimens without compromising the postoperative outcome. Consequently, for risk-adapted thrombosis prophylaxis, either LMWH or UFH can be administrated.

This work analyzed the frequency of 16 virulence genes, the genotypic diversity, and the antimicrobial resistance profiles of 130 S. flexneri strains isolated in Brazil. The ipaH gene was found in all the 130 strains. The frequencies of the other genes were variable ial (88.5%), sigA (82.3%), iuc (74.6%), virA (73%), pic (72.3%), virF (57.7%), sat (48.5%), ipaBCD (37%), sen (36%), set1A (35.4%), sepA (30%), set1B (30%), virB (14%), icsA (10%), and ipgD (5.4%). A total of 57 (43.8%) strains were multidrug-resistant. ERIC-PCR grouped 96 of the strains into a single cluster with ≥ 70.4% of similarity, 75 of these strains presented a similarity ≥ 80.9%. PFGE grouped 120 of the strains into a single cluster with 57.4% of similarity and 82 of these strains presented a similarity ≥ 70.6%. In conclusion, the high frequency of some virulence genes reinforces the pathogenic potential of the strains studied. The high rates of MDR strains are alarming once it may lead to failure when antimicrobial treatment is necessary. Genotype techniques reveled a major cluster with high genetic similarity including S. flexneri strains from the different Brazilian states and distinct years of isolation, showing that they probably emerged from a common ancestor.

No gold standard of nutritional assessment is established among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). check details This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of pre-treatment nutritional status using the Mini Nutritional Assessment-short form (MNA-SF) among HNC patients receiving CCRT.

A total of 461 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed HNC treated with definitive CCRT at three medical institutes were prospectively enrolled. Nutritional status was assessed using MNA-SF within 7 days before CCRT initiation. Patients were classified as having normal nutrition, at risk of malnutrition, and malnourished groups according to MNA-SF for comparison.

The 1-year overall survival rates were 89.8%, 76.8%, and 67.7% in the normal nutrition, at risk of malnutrition, and malnourished groups, respectively. Patients with normal nutrition had significantly lower rates of uncompleted radiotherapy and chemotherapy (4.5% and 4.1%, respectively) compared with patients at risk for malnutrition (14.
