We evaluated the temporal ordering of overall and subtypes of LAE (intellectual, physical, and social) and cognitive performance (global, language, memory, and visuospatial function) among non-demented older adults.
The Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project concurrently administered a survey measure of 13 leisure activities and a neuropsychological battery every 18-24 months for up to 14 years to 5,384 racially and ethnically diverse participants. Levels and changes of overall and subtypes of LAE were positively correlated with cognitive performance in the overall sample and within each diagnostic group. Soil from an agricultural field in Halen (Belgium) with a history of linuron exposure has been studied for its linuron-degrading bacterial populations at two time points over the past decade and Variovorax was appointed as a key linuron degrader. Like most studies on pesticide degradation, these studies relied on isolates that were retrieved through bias-prone enrichment procedures and therefore might not represent the in situ active pesticide-degrading populations. In this study, we revisited the Halen field and applied, in addition to enrichment-based isolation, DNA stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP), to identify in situ linuron-degrading bacteria in linuron-exposed soil microcosms. Linuron dissipation was unambiguously linked to Variovorax and its linuron catabolic genes and might involve the synergistic cooperation between two species. Additionally, two novel linuron-mineralizing Variovorax isolates were obtained with high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strains isolated from the same field a decade earlier. The results confirm Variovorax as a prime in situ degrader of linuron in the studied agricultural field soil and corroborate the genus as key for maintaining the genetic memory of linuron degradation functionality in that field.

The authors sought to assess the longevity extension effect of a crisscross implantation pattern in PDO-barbed thread lifting.
To acquire the desired outcome in PDO-barbed thread lifting, the authors suggested a paradigm shift to incorporate biochemical factors in enforcing the physico-mechanical lift. A nude mouse model was employed to evaluate their theory to compare the conventional fan-shaped protocols in barbed thread lifting with an architectural construction of intersections of fibrous capsule in a crisscross pattern. Three fragments of monofilament PDO-barbed-lifting threads were implanted in the dorsal skin of 12 nude mice. The pattern of implantation was fan-shaped in the control group and crisscross in the experimental group. Tissue specimens containing tangential areas of threads were harvested, fixed, and paraffin-embedded. Samples were horizontally cut and histologically analyzed employing hematoxylin and eosin, Massons’ Trichrome, and Sirius red staining. Fibrotic areas and the width of fibrosis from the thread were also analyzed.
Fibrous capsulations around the barbed area of the PDO-barbed lifting threads were threefold greater than those around the barb-free areas of the threads. In the crisscross implantation pattern, width and density of the fibrotic areas were fivefold greater than those of the fan-shaped areas. Induction of fibrous capsules around the PDO-barbed thread was markedly condensed in the crisscross areas.
This study provides the basis for a more logical implantation pattern in PDO-barbed lifting threads for facial rejuvenation. By generating controlled multiple crisscross patterns, we can create more intense fibrogenesis, reduce tension applied on each barbed thread, and, therefore, extend the longevity of the result.
Developments in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) result in an exponential increase in the amount of data generated by sequencing experiments, an increase in the complexity of bioinformatics analysis reporting and an increase in the types of data generated. These increases in volume, diversity and complexity of the data generated and their analysis expose the necessity of a structured and standardized reporting template. BioCompute Objects (BCOs) provide the requisite support for communication of HTS data analysis that includes support for workflow, as well as data, curation, accessibility and reproducibility of communication. BCOs standardize how researchers report provenance and the established verification and validation protocols used in workflows while also being robust enough to convey content integration or curation in knowledge bases. BCOs that encapsulate tools, platforms, datasets and workflows are FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) compliant. Providing operational workflow and data information facilitates interoperability between platforms and incorporation of future dataset within an HTS analysis for use within industrial, academic and regulatory settings.
