    The presence of zoonotic relevant Angiostrongylus cantonensis infections has recently been reported in rat final hosts and gastropod intermediate hosts in Tenerife, Spain. However, data on A. cantonensis, Angiostrongylus vasorum and Aelurostrongylus abstrusus prevalences in endemic gastropods for other islands of the Macaronesian Archipelago are still missing. In order to fill this gap, we conducted an epidemiological study on terrestrial native slug (Plutonia lamarckii) and snail (Cornu aspersum, Theba pisana, Rumina decollata) species in 27 selected locations of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, Lanzarote, La Palma and Fuerteventura. Overall, 131 terrestrial gastropods were collected in winter/spring season 2018/2019 and examined for the presence of metastrongyloid lungworm larvae via artificial digestion. The current data revealed a total prevalence of 4.6% for A. vasorum, 3.8% for A. abstrusus and 0.8% for A. cantonensis. In Tenerife, three lungworm species were detected, thereby re-confirming A. cantonensis endemicity for this island. Prevalences of snails (C. aspersum) originating from El Hierro were 5% for A. KYA1797K in vitro abstrusus and 15% for A. vasorum, respectively, with larval burdens up to 290 larvae per specimen. This epidemiological study indicates the presence of human, canine and feline lungworm species in Macaronesia, Spain. The current data-particularly those on anthropozoonotic A. cantonensis-call for a regular large-scale monitoring on intermediate hosts, paratenic hosts and definitive hosts to prevent further spread of lungworm-related diseases in humans and animals.

    To test a stent-graft specifically designed for the ascending aorta in phantom, cadaver, and clinical application, and to measure deployment accuracy to overcome limitations of existing devices.

    A stent-graft has been designed with support wires to fixate the apices toward the inner curvature, thereby eliminating the forward movement of the proximal end which can happen with circumferential tip capture systems. The device was deployed in three aortic phantoms, and in four cadavers, deployment precision was measured. Subsequently, the device was implanted in a patient to exclude a pseudoaneurysm originating from the distal anastomosis after ascending aortic replacement.

    The stent-grafts were successfully deployed in all phantoms and cadavers. Deployment accuracy of the proximal end of the stent-graft was within 1mm proximally and 14mm distally to the intended landing zone on the inner curvature, and 2-8mm distal to the intended landing zone on the outer curvature. In clinical application, the pseudoaneurysm could be successfully excluded without complications.

    The novel stent-graft design promises accurate placement in the ascending aorta. The differential deployment of the apices at the inner and outer curvatures allows deployment perpendicular to the aortic axis.

    No level of evidence.Sediments from Lake Mariut, Egypt, after its rehabilitation, and its anoxic diverted polluted drains were subjected to five sequential steps to define different geochemical fractions of eight studied metals. Results cleared out that 30-50% of its total Cd and total Co contents are easily bioavailable with a high-risk assessment code (RAC) to enter the food chain in the lake basin. Whereas Cu and Fe are safe and the remaining studied metals, i.e., Mn, Zn, Pb, and Cr are of medium risk for the environment. Individual contamination factor (ICF) is high (> 6) for all the studied metals except for Fe and Cu which are tightly held in sediments confirming their safeness to biota. Cadmium accounted for > 94% of the total risk in the study area. Metal pollution loading (MPL) from the sediments was found in the order Fe > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cr > Co > Cd.

    Due to inconsistent findings in limited previous cohort studies, the aim of this study was to estimate the obesity effect on periodontitis progression in Thai adults.

    This 10-year retrospective cohort study comprised 2216 employees of the Electric Generation Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Their demographic, medical, and periodontal status was collected. Subjects with periodontitis progression were defined as having ≥ 2 teeth with progression. Additional proximal clinical attachment loss ≥ 3mm or tooth loss with severe periodontitis at baseline were used to identify disease progression at the tooth level. Central obesity was classified using the waist-hip ratio. Multi-level Poisson regression was used to determine the effect of obesity on periodontitis progression by adjusting for age, sex, education, income, smoking, alcohol drinking, exercise, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension.

    The cumulative incidence of periodontitis progression during the 10-year period was 59.6 cases per 100 persons (95% CI 57.5, 61.6). The univariate analysis indicated that obese subjects had 15% higher risk of progression than that of healthy subjects. However, when confounders were analyzed simultaneously, the effect of obesity was not significant with a risk ratio of 0.98 (95% CI 0.88, 1.08).

    Despite the higher incidence of disease progression in the obese, obesity is not an independent risk factor for periodontitis progression.

Early mammalian embryogenesis is characterized by a major phase of epigenetic reprogramming, which involves global DNA methylation changes and activity of TET enzymes; the importance of DNA methylation reprogramming for successful human preimplantation development has not been investigated. Here, we analyzed early human embryos for dynamic changes in 5-methylcytosine and its oxidized derivatives generated by TET enzymes. We observed that 5-methylcytosine and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine show similar, albeit less pronounced, asymmetry between the parental pronuclei of human zygotes relative to mouse zygotes. Notably, we detected low levels of 5-formylcytosine and 5-carboxylcytosine, with no apparent difference in maternal or paternal pronuclei of human zygotes. Analysis of later human preimplantation stages revealed a mosaic pattern of DNA 5C modifications similar to those of the mouse and other mammals. Strikingly, using noninvasive time-lapse imaging and well-defined cell cycle parameters, we analyzed normally and abnormally developing human four-cell embryos for global reprogramming of DNA methylation and detected lower 5-methylcytosine and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine levels in normal embryos compared to abnormal embryos.
