This study explored the utility of epidermal sensitization assay (EpiSensA) to evaluate the sensitization potential of complex and/or “difficult to test” chemicals. Assay performance was evaluated by testing a set of 20 test chemicals including 10 methacrylate esters, 5 silicone-based compounds, 3 crop protection formulations, and 2 surfactant mixtures; each had prior in vivo data plus some in silico and in vitro data. Using the weight of evidence (WoE) assessments by REACH Lead Registrants, 14 of these chemicals were sensitizers and, six were nonsensitizers based on in vivo studies (local lymph node assay [LLNA] and/or guinea pig studies). The EpiSensA correctly predicted 16/20 materials with three test materials as false positive and one silane as false negative. This silane, classified as weak sensitizer via LLNA, also gave a “false negative” result in the KeratinoSens™ assay. Overall, consistent with prior evaluations, the EpiSensA demonstrated an accuracy level of 80% relative to available in vivo WoE assessments. In addition, potency classification based on the concentration showing positive marker gene expression of EpiSensA was performed. The EpiSensA correctly predicted the potency for all seven sensitizing methacrylates classified as weak potency via LLNA (EC3 ≥ 10%). In summary, EpiSensA could identify dermal sensitization potential of these test substances and mixtures, and continues to show promise as an in vitro alternative method for dermal sensitization.Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a common bacterial pathogen infecting chickens, resulting in economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. In particular, APEC O1, one of the most common serotypes of APEC, is considered problematic due to its zoonotic potential. Therefore, many attempts have been made to develop an effective vaccine against APEC O1. In fact, the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen of APEC O1 has been shown to be a potent antigen for inducing specific protective immune responses. However, the detailed structure of the O-antigen of APEC O1 is not clear. The present study demonstrates the first synthesis of a pentasaccharide repeating unit of LPS derived from virulent E. coli O1 and its conjugate with BSA. ELISA tests using the semi-synthetic glycoconjugate and the APEC O1 immune chicken serum revealed that the pentasaccharide is a glycotope candidate of APEC O1, with great potential as an antigen for vaccine development.

    The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of laser therapy in treating cicatricial ectropion.

    Seven patients with cicatricial ectropion were entered into this clinical study. The ectropions were pretreated with the 595-nm pulsed dye laser if the scar color was red. If there was no red, the UltraPulse fractional CO

    laser was used and parameters were adapted according to the height of scar. MEBT/MEBO was used after laser treatment for wound healing. The degree of ectropion was measured for changes before and after treatment, and the scars were evaluated for changes in melanin, height, vascularity, and pliability using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) before and after treatment.

    All seven patients with cicatricial ectropion entered into this protocol were completely corrected after 1-2 treatment sessions. The total VSS score, as well as the score for melanin and pliability in 7 patients, showed a decrease following the treatments, and this was statistically significant (P<0.05). The scores for height and vascularity showed a decrease following the treatments, but there was no significant difference by statistical analysis (P≥0.05). There were no adverse reactions reported.

The association between varietal color richness and profitability indicates farmers could design mixtures to enhance economic returns.
