The cell and animal experiments confirmed that LACMC-NBA NPs increased cellular uptake, improved cytotoxicity in tumor cells, and enhanced growth inhibition in vivo than CMC-NBA NPs. Thus, these photo-crosslinked nanogels possess great potential for DOX delivery.Antioxidants fucoidans from three seaweeds, Undaria pinnatifida (FUP), Macrocystis pyrifera (FMP) and Fucus vesiculosus (FFV) are sold commercially. However, it is unclear which fucoidan is the most potent antioxidant. Therefore, our objective was to compare the antioxidant activities of these fucoidans. For this purpose, six in vitro antioxidant tests were used, total antioxidant capacity, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, ferrous and cupric chelating assay, reducing power and H2O2 scavenging assay. The data showed that the fucoidans had a low capacity to donate electrons, and a low capacity to chelate metals. The best activity obtained was in the scavenging of hydroxyl radical. When macrophages were exposed to H2O2 and fucoidans, MTT and live/dead assays showed that all fucoidans protected cells from oxidative damage. The survival rate of zebrafish embryos was significantly higher when exposed to H2O2 and fucoidans than H2O2 alone. In summary, the fucoidans evaluated were ranked according to their antioxidant activity as follows FMP > FFV > FUP, and the results suggest that these fucoidans, mainly FMP, can be used in the formulation of medicines/foods.Nanocellulose has broad and promising applications owing to its low density, large specific surface area, high mechanical strength, modifiability, renewability. Recently, nanocellulose has been widely used to fabricate flexible, durable and environmental-friendly sensor substrates. In this contribution, the construction and characteristics of nanocellulose-based sensors are comprehensively reviewed. Various nanocellulose-based sensors are summarized and divided into colorimetric, fluorescent, electronic, electrochemical and SERS types according to the sensing mechanism. This review also introduces the applications of nanocellulose-based sensors in the fields of biomedicine, environmental monitoring, food safety, and wearable devices.Antibodies play a crucial role in the defense mechanism countering pathogens or foreign antigens in eukaryotes. Its potential as an analytical and diagnostic tool has been exploited for over a century. It forms immunocomplexes with a specific antigen, which is the basis of immunoassays and aids in developing potent biosensors. Antibody-based sensors allow for the quick and accurate detection of various analytes. Though classical antibodies have prolonged been used as bioreceptors in biosensors fabrication due to their increased fragility, they have been engineered into more stable fragments with increased exposure of their antigen-binding sites in the recent era. In biosensing, the formats constructed by antibody engineering can enhance the signal since the resistance offered by a conventional antibody is much more than these fragments. Hence, signal amplification can be observed when antibody fragments are utilized as bioreceptors instead of full-length antibodies. We present the first systematic review on engineered antibodies as bioreceptors with the description of their engineering methods. The detection of various target analytes, including small molecules, macromolecules, and cells using antibody-based biosensors, has been discussed. A comparison of the classical polyclonal, monoclonal, and engineered antibodies as bioreceptors to construct highly accurate, sensitive, and specific sensors is also discussed.Excessive discharge of inorganic and organic contaminants in water poses a serious threat to the ecosystems. However, most synthetic adsorbents lack cost-effectiveness in terms of preparation. Interestingly, loofah sponge (LS) was a natural absorbent that could effectively remove pollutions in wastewater, but its adsorption capacity is barely satisfactory. Herein, we present a novel strategy of TEMPO-oxidized loofah sponge (TOLS) to boost the adsorption performance of LS. The batch experiments demonstrated that the maximum removal capacity of TOLS for Pb(II) and methylene blue (MB) was 96.6 mg/g and 10.0 mg/g, respectively, which were 3.5 and 1.3 times that of pristine LS. Immunology chemical Notably, the continuous-flow reaction testing of the mixed solution revealed that the elimination rate of Pb(II) and MB was still better than 90 % even after 16 h. Such excellent performance was benefit from the enhanced specific surface area and surface carboxyl content of TOLS. This work offers new insights into the rational development of multifunctional and inexpensive cellulose-based bio-adsorbents for wastewater remediation.Composite gel beads using calcium alginate and different concentrations of pregelatinized corn starch (PCS) were produced to encapsulate phycocyanin (PC). Rheological properties of different sodium alginate/PCS/PC mixtures, structural and morphological properties of beads, and kinetic stability of encapsulated PC (upon heating at various time-temperature combinations) were then assessed. Rheological properties of the mixtures exhibited shear thinning behaviors. Aquagram revealed that the PC-containing beads had more water structure with weak‑hydrogen bonds. Morphological images represented less subsidence in the structures of composite gel beads, unlike PCS-free beads. Kinetic study showed that degradation rate constant values of PC encapsulated in composite gel beads (1.08-3.45 × 10-4, 3.38-4.43 × 10-4, and 5.57-15.32 × 10-4 s-1) were lower than those in PCS-free alginate gel beads (4.45 × 10-4, 9.20 × 10-4, and 18.04 × 10-4 s-1) at 40, 50, and 60 °C, respectively. This study suggests that the composite gel beads can improve PC stability.Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) braided stents have superior biocompatibility and flexibility, substituting metal stents in peripheral blood vessels. However, the radial supporting capacity of PLLA braided stent should be improved to bear the dynamic load from the peripheral artery. This paper evaluated the radial support performance of PLLA braided stents with different braiding angles after the radial cyclic loads test. The results indicate that braiding angle of stents is an important parameter affecting its ability to resist radial cyclic loads. The stent with a smaller braiding angle has better initial radial support but insufficient durability, while the stent with a larger braiding angle could maintain adequate radial support and suitable ability to resist radial cyclic loads. The theoretical analysis, verified by observing the surface morphology of filament crossover points, found that filaments of the stents with smaller braiding angles have more significant axial displacement and axial rotation angle during radial compression, which made the friction phenomenon more intense and led to insufficient ability to resist radial cyclic loads. This study could provide a meaningful idea for preparing biodegradable braided stents with suitable ability to resist radial cyclic loads.Nanoplastics, as an emerging pollutant in the environment, have the potential to adsorb various macromolecules onto the surface to form protein corona that may change the physicochemical properties and environmental fate of themselves, which deepens the uncertainty of their environmental hazards. Hence, in present study, we investigated the interaction between polystyrene nanoplastics and urease that forms protein corona over time in different conditions with atomic force microscopy, zeta potential, hydrodynamic diameter, and infrared spectroscopy. According to our results, polystyrene nanoplastics adsorbed urease and formed hard corona, changing the secondary structure of urease, and that the physicochemical properties of protein corona changed and stabilized over time. We concluded that even in a single-protein system, a dynamic process where protein molecules simultaneously adsorb onto and desorb from the surface of nanoplastics runs through the entire interaction. And we found that the formation and evolution of protein corona were governed by various interlinked factors (e.g., pH and nanoplastic surface modification types) instead of dominated by individual factor. This study aims to improve the knowledge about the formation of nanoplastic-protein corona and thus provide a reference for better evaluation of their environmental risk.Cryopreservation of bovine semen plays a vital role in accelerating genetic improvement and elite breeding, but it has a detrimental effect on sperm quality, resulting in the decline of the reproductive efficiency. The glycosylation modification of protein has irreplaceable roles in spermatozoa. Herein, the effect of cryopreservation on glycoproteins of bovine spermatozoa has been studied for the first time using a tandem mass tag (TMT)-labeled quantitative glycoproteome. A total of 2598 proteins and 492 glycoproteins were identified, including 83 different expression proteins (DEPs) and 44 different expression glycosylated proteins (DEGPs) between fresh and frozen spermatozoa. Thirty-three DEPs are glycoproteins, which demonstrates that glycoproteins of bovine sperm were seriously affected by cryopreservation. Moreover, the effects include glycoprotein expression, glycosylation modification, and substructure localization for proteins such as glycoproteins TEX101, ACRBP, and IZOMU4. The biologic functions of the 115 changed proteins are mainly involved in sperm capacitation, migration in female genitalia, and sperm-egg interaction. Mostly key regulators were identified to be glycoproteins, which confirms that glycosylated proteins played important roles in bovine sperm. This comprehensive study of sperm glycoproteins helps to unravel the cryoinjury mechanisms, thus implying that glycoprotein protection should be an effective way to improve the quality of frozen sperm.Bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are small unilamellar proteoliposomes, which are involved in various functions including cell to cell signaling and protein excretion. Here, we have engineered the OMVs of Escherichia coli to nano-scaled bioreactors for the degradation of β-lactam antibiotics. This was exploited by targeting a β-lactamase (i.e., CMY-10) into the OMVs of a hyper-vesiculating E. coli BL21(DE3) mutant. The CMY-10-containing OMVs, prepared from the E. coli mutant cultures, were able to hydrolyze β-lactam ring of nitrocefin and meropenem to a specific rate of 6.6 × 10-8 and 3.9 × 10-12 μmol/min/µm3 of OMV, which is approximately 100 and 600-fold greater than those of E. coli-based whole-cell biocatalsyts. Furthermore, CMY-10, which was encapsulated in the engineered OMVs, was much more stable against temperature and acid stresses, as compared to free enzymes in aqueous phase. The OMV-based nano-scaled reaction system would be useful for the remediation of a variety of antibiotics pollution for food and agricultural industry. As obesity prevalence increases, more and more drugs that assist with weight loss have been developed. Numerous weight loss drugs had been approved, but many have also been withdrawn based on their lack of efficacy as well as safety concerns. Initial approaches in developing weight loss drugs was by increasing physiological energy expenditure and suppressing the appetite. Subsequently, as more physiological mechanisms for weight gain has been unearthed, drugs targeting newly discovered receptors and/or enzymes have been introduced with improved safety profiles and fewer psychological adverse events. Additionally, drugs targeting hunger or satiety signaling have been actively studied, and have shown increased adoption by physicians. Studies have also evaluated drugs that target metabolic tissues-such as adipose tissue or muscle-to promote weight loss, however to-date nothing has carried on into clinical practice. Starting with a brief history of early obesity treatments, this review evaluates current weight loss pharmaceutical options based on their duration of therapy status.
