But even though the results of seagull and SGL were very similar (R

     > 0.99), seagull computed the solution in a fraction of the time needed by SGL. Additionally, seagull enables the incorporation of weights for each penalized feature.

The following operators for linear regression models are available in seagull lasso, group lasso, sparse-group lasso and Integrative LASSO with Penalty Factors (IPF-lasso). Thus, seagull is a convenient envelope of lasso variants.

Cryptogenic multifocal ulcer stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) is a rare disease characterized by multiple superficial ulcers, stenosis, and obstruction of the small intestine of unknown origin, and the course can recur.

We encountered a 62-year-old male patient with intestinal obstruction. The patient was admitted to the hospital for surgical treatment due to intestinal obstruction, and was diagnosed with cryptogenic multifocal ulcer stenosis enteritis due to comprehensive surgery and postoperative pathological considerations.

In the future, we will continue to follow up the patient. The present study aims to remind clinicians of this disease, and reduce the incidence of misdiagnosis.

Pyropia yezoensis (Rhodophyta) is widely cultivated in East Asia and plays important economic, ecological and research roles. selleck kinase inhibitor Although inorganic carbon utilization of P. yezoensis has been investigated from a physiological aspect, the carbon concentration mechanism (CCM) of P. yezoensis remains unclear. To explore the CCM of P. yezoensis, especially during its different life stages, we tracked changes in the transcriptome, photosynthetic efficiency and in key enzyme activities under different inorganic carbon concentrations.

Photosynthetic efficiency demonstrated that sporophytes were more sensitive to low carbon (LC) than gametophytes, with increased photosynthesis rate during both life stages under high carbon (HC) compared to normal carbon (NC) conditions. The amount of starch and number of plastoglobuli in cells corresponded with the growth reaction to different inorganic carbon (Ci) concentrations. We constructed 18 cDNA libraries from 18 samples (three biological replicates per Ci treatment at two ls from transcriptome and enzyme activity levels. All results indicated at least two types of CCM in P. yezoensis, one involving CA and an anion exchanger (transporter), and a second, C4-like pathway belonging to the PEPCK subtype. PYC may play the main carboxylation role in this C4-like pathway, which functions in both the sporophyte and gametophyte life cycles.

The genus Cypripedium L. is one of the five genera of the subfamily Cypripedioideae, members of which are commonly known as lady’s slipper orchids. Cypripedium japonicum is a perennial herb native to East Asia, specifically China, Japan, and Korea. Due to its limited distribution, the species is included in the Endangered category of the IUCN Red List.

We investigated gametophyte development, including complete embryogenesis, in C. japonicum. The complete reproductive cycle is presented based on our observations. Anther development begins under the soil, and meiosis of pollen mother cells begins 3 weeks before anthesis, possibly during early April. The megaspore mother cells develop just after pollination in early May and mature in mid-late June. The pattern of embryo sac formation is bisporic, and there are six nuclei three forming the egg apparatus, two polar nuclei, and an antipodal cell in the mature embryo sac. Triple fertilization results in the endosperm nucleus, which degenerates when the proembryo reaches the eight-to-sixteen-cell stage.

Our overall comparisons of the features of gametophyte and embryo development in C. japonicum suggest that previous reports on the embryology of Cypripedium are not sufficient for characterization of the entire genus. Based on the available information, a reproductive calendar showing the key reproductive events leading to embryo formation has been prepared.

Although quality-of-care domains for home-based primary and palliative programs have been proposed, they have had limited testing in practice. Our aim was to evaluate the care provision in a community-based serious-illness care program, a combined home-based primary and palliative care model.

Retrospective chart review of patients in an academic community-based serious-illness care program in central North Carolina from August 2014 to March 2016 (n = 159). Chart review included demographics, health status, and operationalized measures of seven quality-of-care domains medical assessment, care coordination, safety, quality of life, provider competency, goal attainment, and access.

Patients were mostly women (56%) with an average age of 70 years. Patients were multi-morbid (53% ≥3 comorbidities), functionally impaired (45% had impairment in ≥2 activities of daily living) and 32% had dementia. During the study period, 31% of patients died. Chart review found high rates assessment of functional status (97%), falls (98%), and medication safety (96%).
