    In the present work we compare the effect that VLPs or inactivated FMDV has on bovine dendritic cells and the humoral response elicited in cattle after a single vaccination.The rumen microbiome plays a fundamental role in all ruminant species, it is involved in health, nutrient utilization, detoxification, and methane emissions. Methane is a greenhouse gas which is eructated in large volumes by ruminants grazing extensive grasslands in the tropical regions of the world. Enteric methane is the largest contributor to the emissions of greenhouse gases originating from animal agriculture. A large variety of plants containing secondary metabolites [essential oils (terpenoids), tannins, saponins, and flavonoids] have been evaluated as cattle feedstuffs and changes in volatile fatty acid proportions and methane synthesis in the rumen have been assessed. Alterations to the rumen microbiome may lead to changes in diversity, composition, and structure of the methanogen community. Legumes containing condensed tannins such as Leucaena leucocephala have shown a good methane mitigating effect when fed at levels of up to 30-35% of ration dry matter in cattle as a result of the effect of condenn and reduce feed energy loss as methane in ruminants fed tropical plant species.Brucella, a genus of bacteria that causes brucellosis, infects and threatens domestic animals, and humans in endemic areas. Presently, some live attenuated vaccines of Brucella are used to immunize livestock; however, these vaccines are pathogenic to humans, can provoke abortion when administered to pregnant livestock, and induce antibodies in vaccinated livestock that affect the diagnosis of field infection. It is, therefore, very important for improving the safety and immune protection effects of Brucella vaccine. Currently, recombinant protein-based subunit vaccines are considered promising safe and effective alternatives against brucellosis. Here, we separately expressed the recombinant Omp10-Omp28-L7/L12 proteins of Brucella using eukaryotic and prokaryotic expression systems, which were then used as immunogens for evaluating their immune responses. Taishan Pinus massoniana pollen polysaccharides (TPPPS), an already verified natural adjuvant, was utilized to evaluate the immune conditioning effect on the the addition of TPPPS adjuvant could significantly improve the protective effects of subunit vaccines. However, we also noticed that all of the evaluated subunit vaccines induced less protection than the B. melitensis M5 live vaccine. These results indicate that the combination of recombinant Omp10-Omp28-L7/L12 antigen and TPPPS adjuvant shows potential as an effective brucellosis subunit vaccine, and P. pastoris is a preferred expression system to prepare this recombinant subunit antigen.The presence of Salmonella spp. in broiler production is a food safety concern as the bacterium can be transmitted to humans via contaminated meat and derived products. Salmonella detection in litter at the pre-slaughter period has been linked to increased odds of contaminated broiler carcasses and meat derived products. To determine risk factors related to farm and broiler house characteristics and management practices, this study uses a unique longitudinal data set from a Brazilian integrated broiler enterprise, which contains official results of Salmonella spp. isolation from drag swabs collected at the end of the grow-out period. A Bayesian hierarchical spatio-temporal model found significant spatial and time influence on the odds of isolating Salmonella spp. from litter as well as significant effects from the size of a broiler house, total housing area per farm, type of broiler house, and number of litter recycles. Results indicate that recycling litter beyond 6 rearing cycles significantly increased the odds of isolating Salmonella before slaughter, and the bacterium was more likely to persist in conventional broiler houses, compared to broiler houses with controlled environment. Evidence of a potential principal-agent problem was also found in setting strategies to control the bacterium from litter, which suggests strong incentives to adopt the strategies aiming to reduce prevalence of the bacterium in the integrated enterprise. Our findings could be used to develop alternative measures to reduce the risk of persistence of the bacterium in the broiler production chain.Next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods have been used to identify a diverse ocular surface (OS) microbiota in humans. These results have highlighted limitations in microbial detection via traditional culture-based techniques. The OS has mechanisms such as tear film and mechanical blinking, which may aid in preventing adherence and colonization of microbes, suggesting that only low populations of microbes may reside on the OS. Additionally, closely related tissues to the OS are exposed to a similar array of microbes, but demonstrate different defense mechanisms. Information regarding concordance of microbial communities of the OS and nearby tissues is lacking. Our study purposes were to (1) characterize the conjunctival microbiota of healthy dogs, (2) compare the conjunctival microbiota to the periocular haired skin and distal nose, and (3) compare the bacteria identified by culture to NGS of the healthy canine conjunctiva. Here, NGS was used to evaluate samples from 25 healthy adult dogs of the conjunctiva,f bacterial communities in disease is warranted.The aim of this 29-week randomized, positively and negatively controlled study was to investigate whether a nutraceutical containing 1 g leucine and 13 mg pyridoxine can enhance weight loss while maintaining lean muscle mass in obese dogs. Twenty-four healthy, 2-year-old beagles were initially divided into obesification (n = 18) or ideal body weight groups (n = 6). After obesification, the 18 dogs were divided into three weight loss groups and fed one of the following over 12 weeks nutraceutical with canned adult diet (CAD; ObN), placebo with CAD (ObP), or a canned therapeutic weight loss diet (WLD). Dogs in the ideal body weight (IBW) group were fed maintenance calorie requirements with CAD over 12 weeks. Based on MANOVA, ObN and WLD lost similar amounts of total weight (3.6 ± 0.9 vs. 4.4 ± 1.1 kg, respectively) and fat mass (3.1 ± 0.6 vs. 3.9 ± 0.8 kg, respectively) after 12 weeks of treatment, and more than ObP (1.1 ± 1.2 kg weight; 0.9 ± 1.0 kg fat; p less then 0.0001).
