This may explain the previously reported superior visual outcomes in the LASIK group eyes when compared to the contralateral SMILE group eyes.

In this contralateral eye study, topography-guided myopic LASIK was found to achieve significantly better effective centration compared to myopic SMILE, in regards digitally measured decentration of the effective refractive change achieved in the anterior corneal curvature from the corneal vertex. This may explain the previously reported superior visual outcomes in the LASIK group eyes when compared to the contralateral SMILE group eyes.

To compare the time spent on toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation during cataract surgery using a manual-marking versus a digital image-guided system (the Verion) for toric IOL alignment.

All procedures were performed at the Instituto Oftalmológico Quirónsalud ophthalmology clinic (A Coruña, Spain).

We designed an experimental and longitudinal (1-month follow-up) study.

A total of 98 eyes of 65 participants (68.2±12.2 years) were divided into two groups 49 eyes operated with toric IOL alignment using a manual-marking technique (manual group) and another 49 eyes operated using image-guided marking (Verion group). The primary variable for comparison between both groups was cataract surgery time. Other outcomes such as toric IOL misalignment, spherical equivalent (SE), astigmatism, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were also measured.

The total cataract surgery time was 209 minutes shorter (p <0.001) with the Verion system (1212±220) compared to the surgical procedure performed using manual marking (1527±304). One month after surgery, there were no statistical differences in terms of toric IOL misalignment between the Verion (3.38°±2.95°) and the manual group (4.66°±3.95°). No statistical differences were observed between groups for refractive and visual outcomes either (p≥0.05).

The cataract surgery time was reduced when the procedure was assisted using the Verion system to align the IOL compared to manual marking, maintaining the same efficacy in terms of toric IOL misalignment, residual refraction, and visual acuity.

To report the intra-operative changes in corneal pachymetry, efficacy and safety of accelerated corneal crosslinking (A-CXL) treatment using only hypo-osmolar riboflavin (HO-RF) solution in progressive keratoconus patients with thin corneas.

University of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Cemil Tascioglu City Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

    Retrospective study.

Thirty-one eyes of 25 patients (mean age 24.17±3.07 years) with thin keratoconic corneas (<400 µm without epithelium) who had A-CXL (9 mW/cm2-10 minutes) with HO-RF solution application were enrolled in the study. Peroperative corneal pachymetric changes and uncorrected-corrected distance visual acuities (UCVA-CDVA), refraction power values, topographic values and endothelial cell density (ECD) measurements were recorded pre-operatively and at 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th month follow-up after surgery.

The mean thinnest corneal pachymetry (TCP) was 423 µm preoperatively and the thickness was reduced to a mean value of 375 µm after removing the epithelium. The mean thickness increased to 438 µm (p=0.001) after the application of HO-RF solution, and it was reduced to 424 µm (p=0.001) after ultraviolet irradiation. At all postoperative visits after month 1, there was a significant increase in both UCVA (p<0.05) and CDVA (p<0.01) values, and a significant decrease in both Kmax (p<0.05) and ECD (p<0.01) values.

Accelerated corneal CXL with only hypo-osmolar riboflavin solution application throughout the procedure in thin corneas is effective, but seems to result in a significant endothelial cell density decrease postoperatively.

The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric emergency department (ED) utilization and outcomes.

This study is an interrupted-time-series observational study of children presenting to 11 Canadian tertiary-care pediatric EDs. Data were grouped into weeks in 3 study periods prepandemic (January 1, 2018-January 27, 2020), peripandemic (January 28, 2020-March 10, 2020), and early pandemic (March 11, 2020-April 30, 2020). These periods were compared with the same time intervals in the 2 preceding calendar years. Primary outcomes were number of ED visits per week. The secondary outcomes were triage acuity, hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mortality, length of hospital stay, ED revisits, and visits for trauma and mental health concerns.

There were 577,807 ED visits (median age, 4.5 years; 52.9% male). Relative to the prepandemic period, there was a reduction [-58%; 95% confidence interval (CI), -63% to -51%] in the number of ED visits during the eaarly-pandemic period. When faced with a future pandemic, public health officials must consider the impact of the illness and the measures implemented on children’s health and acute care needs.

After the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, dramatic reductions in pediatric ED visits occurred across Canada. Children seeking ED care were sicker, and there was an increase in trauma-related visits among children more than 10 years of age, whereas mental health visits declined during the early-pandemic period. When faced with a future pandemic, public health officials must consider the impact of the illness and the measures implemented on children’s health and acute care needs.

Chronic hepatitis B is associated with important morbidity and mortality. Selleckchem Bcl2 inhibitor Inflammation has a pivotal role in hepatic fibrosis of this population. Hemogram-derived inflammatory predictors, such as mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), are supposed as inflammatory markers in various diseases. We aimed to compare MPV and PLR of the patients with chronic hepatitis B to those of healthy controls and to observe possible correlation between these markers and fibrosis.

Chronic hepatitis B patients that visited our outpatient gastroenterology clinics were enrolled in the study. Healthy volunteers were enrolled as controls. MPV, PLR and other parameters of the study groups were compared.

    Median MPV of the mild fibrosis, advanced fibrosis control groups were 8.1 (6.6-13) fL, 8.2 (6.3-14.5) fL and 7.2 (4.6-8.9) fL, respectively (P < 0.001). Median PLR of the mild fibrosis, advanced fibrosis control groups were 99.5 (36-259) %, 119 (61-1547) % and 122 (64-197) %, respectively (P = 0.02).
