We introduce fluoride-selective anion exchange resin sorbents as sensitisers into membranes for water-gated field effect transistors (WGTFTs). Sorbents were prepared via metal (La or Al)-loading of a commercial macroporous aminophosphonic acid resin, PurometTM MTS9501, and were filled into a plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) phase transfer membrane. We found a potentiometric response (membrane potential leading to WGTFT threshold shift) to fluoride following a Langmuir-Freundlich (LF) adsorption isotherm with saturated membrane potential up to ~480 mV, extremely low characteristic concentration c1/2 = 1/K, and picomolar limit of detection (LoD), even though ion exchange did not build up charge on the resin. La-loading gave a superior response compared to Al-loading. Membrane potential characteristics were distinctly different from charge accumulating sensitisers (e.g., organic macrocycles) but similar to the Cs+ (cation) selective ion-exchanging zeolite mineral ‘mordenite’. We propose a mechanism for the observed threshold shift and investigate interference from co-solutes. Strong interference from carbonate was brought under control by ‘diluting’ metal loading in the resin. This work sets a template for future studies using an entirely new ‘family’ of sensitisers in applications where very low limit of detection is essential such as for ions of arsenic, mercury, copper, palladium, and gold.Corilagin (CLG), a major component of several medicinal plants, can exhibit diverse pharmacological properties including those of anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective qualities. However, there are no prior studies on its potential impact on the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. EMT can lead to dissemination of tumor cells into other organs and promote cancer progression. Hence, we aimed to investigate the effect of CLG on EMT and its mechanism(s) of action in tumor cells. We noted that CLG reduced the expression of various epithelial markers and up-regulated the expression of Occludin and E-cadherin in both basal and TGFβ-stimulated tumor cells. CLG treatment also abrogated cellular invasion and migration in colon and prostate carcinoma cells. In addition, CLG effectively attenuated the Wnt/β-catenin signaling cascade in TGFβ-stimulated cells. Overall, our study suggests that CLG may function as and effective modulator of EMT and metastasis in neoplastic cells.The “outdoor veal calf” system was developed to encounter the demand for a veal fattening system that allows for reducing antimicrobial use without impairing animal welfare. Management improvements including direct purchase, short transportation, vaccination, three-week quarantine in individual hutches, and open-air housing in small groups in a roofed, straw-bedded paddock with a group hutch were implemented in a prospective intervention study (1905 calves, 19 intervention and 19 control farms, over one year) antimicrobial use was five times lower in “outdoor veal” farms compared to control farms (p less then 0.001), but it was crucial to ensure that antimicrobial treatment reduction was not associated with decreased animal welfare, i.e., that sick animals were not left untreated. Welfare was assessed monthly on the farms, and organs of 339 calves were examined after slaughter. Cough and nasal discharge were observed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) less often in intervention than in control farms, mortality (3.1% vs. 6.3%, p = 0.020) and lung lesion prevalence (26% vs. 46%, p less then 0.001) were lower; no group difference was seen in abomasal lesion prevalence (65% vs. 72%). Thus, besides reduced antimicrobial use, calf health and welfare were improved in “outdoor veal calf” farms in comparison to traditional operations.Currently, there is only one licensed vaccine against tuberculosis (TB), the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). Despite its protective efficacy against TB in children, BCG has failed to protect adults against pulmonary TB, lacks therapeutic value, and causes complications in immunocompromised individuals. Furthermore, it compromises the use of antigens present in the purified protein derivate of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the diagnosis of TB. Many approaches, e.g., whole-cell organisms, subunit, and recombinant vaccines are currently being explored for safer and more efficacious TB vaccines than BCG. These approaches have been successful in developing a large number of vaccine candidates included in the TB vaccine pipeline and are at different stages of clinical trials in humans. This paper discusses current vaccination strategies, provides directions for the possible routes towards the development of new TB vaccines and highlights recent findings. The efforts for improved TB vaccines may lead to new licensed vaccines capable of replacing/supplementing BCG and conferring therapeutic value in patients with active/latent TB.In patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, undernutrition has a profound effect on prognosis. However, whether body mass index affects the ability to perform activities of daily living as measured by the Barthel index in patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonias remains unknown. Therefore, we examined the impact of body mass index on the activities of daily living in inpatients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. We used a database constructed by the Japan Medical Data Center. Data were extracted from 2774 inpatients from participating hospitals with a diagnosis of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. Multiple regression analysis adjusted for confounding factors was performed to determine whether body mass index classification would be independently related to change in Barthel index during hospitalization. Underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity numbered 473 (19%), 1037 (41), 795 (31%), and 235 (9%), respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that being underweight was independently associated with a change in Barthel index during hospitalization of 2.95 (95% confidence interval -4.82 to -1.07) points lower than being normal weight. Those who were underweight had decreased independence in activities of daily living during hospitalization.
