Can My Video Games Hurt My Eyes? Whether it’s on your phone, tablet, PC, or television, chances are you’ve played some kind of video game recently. From Candy Crush to Angry Birds to Minecraft, video gaming long ago entered – and conquered – the mainstream.
What does that mean for your eyes health? Are you aware that video games are not good for your eyes?
Computer Vision Syndrome
It’s true that long-term gaming sessions with video games can have negative short-term effects on your eye health. Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, is what the American Optometric Association refers to. Utilizing too much digital devices like tablets and computers can cause headaches, eye strain, dry eyes and fatigue in your shoulders and neck.
It can be caused by glare or low screen contrast which can cause your eyes to be more active than they would normally. Because video games require continuous use of screens and, often, by design, allow players to play for extensive periods of time, you may experience computer vision syndrome more frequently when playing than you would during normal use of your devices.
Eye strain can be reduced by using proper lighting. Take frequent breaks to rest your eyes, blink frequently and make sure you have enough light to reduce glare. You might not be able to see the power-up, but your eyes will thank you for it.
What about 3D?
3D gaming has raised new concerns. This was further exacerbated by Nintendo’s announcement that children who are less than 3 years old of age should not have access to the 3D mode on their portable 3DS system. However, even though research is still ongoing, the AOA believes it is beneficial for children to play 3D games. This is because playing 3D video games can aid in identifying early symptoms of ocular disorders; difficulty perceiving 3D game images could be an indication of eye problems that may go unnoticed and undiagnosed.
How Gaming Helps Your Eyes
But that’s not the only way video games can actually help your eyesight. All about minecraft servers and minecraft in general According to the National Institute of Health, studies prove that playing action video games improves certain aspects of visual processing, such as spatial resolution – meaning gamers can actually see things easier and with greater clarity. Some doctors have even used videogame therapy to correct amblyopia (also called lazy eye)
You can play video games. Be sure to play in moderation. There are never too many positive things to bring to your eyes.
